Bulk SMSes and MMSes are banned in India from now till September 30, to prevent to prevent from any religious riots as the Ayodhya title suit judgement is on September 30th.
As a result of this ban, All bulk SMS notifications, including SMS notifications from Banks are banned. Most of the Banks sent emails to the customers saying that they cannot provide any SMS notification until the ban is revoked. One to One SMS service is not affected by this Ban.
“As per the Telecom ministry directive, SMS alert services will not be available till midnight of Wednesday, 29-09-2010. Inconvenience caused is regretted.” HDFC Bank informed its customers.
Following is the email from Citibank to its customers.
“The Department of Telecommunications, Government of India has requested that all bulk SMS services be banned for the next few days. Accordingly, you will not receive any SMS communication from Citibank, till the ban is lifted. You will continue to receive e-mail communication on the e-mail ID registered with us.
In the interim, if you wish to check your account details or salary credit information, we request you to login to Citibank Online with your debit card number and IPIN, at www.citibank.com/india

BAL XXXX - to retrieve your Account Balance
SAL XXXX - to retrieve the last Salary Credit in your account
(XXXX denotes the last 4-digits of your Debit Card number)”
GSM lobby group COAI, today said it has requested the Telecom Department to relax the ban for certain essential services for the benefit of the subscribers.
"We have already written to DoT to relax the ban for essential services. We are yet to hear from them," said COAI Director General Rajan Mattews. Source : economictimes
